Modern Vitiligo Treatment: From Theory to Results
- The most common cause is autoimmune destruction of melanocytes.
- Another theory suggests self-damage caused by the body’s own enzymatic processes due to disrupted cell cycle regulation linked to oxidative stress.

Vitiligo treatment – explained simply
Start vitiligo treatment as early as possible
Newly developed vitiligo often still contains active melanocytes – the earlier treatment begins, the higher the chances of successful repigmentation.
Light as the key to pigment production
UVB light therapy with a wavelength of 311 nm plays a central role in activating melanocytes. Standard sunbeds, infrared radiation or biolamps are not suitable for this purpose. During the summer months, natural sunlight can be used as an additional support. However, the use of tanning beds is not recommended.
A comprehensive treatment approach
In addition to UVB therapy, the use of topical products that support pigment production is recommended. When combined with UVB light or controlled sun exposure, repigmentation can be significantly accelerated.
Slowing the progression of vitiligo
The following factors are essential for successful treatment:
- a healthy lifestyle and regular daily routine,
- reducing stress and potential triggers,
- targeted support through antioxidants.
How UVB light therapy works
Treatment is typically carried out 2–3 times per week. The goal is to achieve a mild redness (erythema) of the depigmented areas. If no redness occurs, the exposure time can be gradually increased. The next session should only take place once the redness has completely subsided – this controlled process supports the formation of new pigment.
Expected results
The first visible signs of repigmentation are often seen after approximately 4–8 weeks of regular use.
Common mistakes
- Irregular use and lack of consistency.
- Stopping the treatment too early.
- Incorrectly adjusted exposure times.
- Incomplete treatment approach without combining methods.
