Where vitiligo often responds best to NB-UVB
Vitiligo on the face and neck often responds particularly well to NB-UVB because hair follicles contain melanocyte stem cells that can support repigmentation.
Typical course of repigmentation
The first small pigment dots may become visible
Visible repigmentation often begins
Pigment islands may gradually begin to merge
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
When can the first results be expected?
Fresh vitiligo patches often respond more quickly. The first visible changes may appear after a few weeks and, in many cases, within 1–3 months.
Can the therapy be combined with creams?
Yes, combining it with Vitistop Gel is often recommended to further support repigmentation.
Are protective goggles required during NB-UVB therapy?
When treating the face or areas near the eyes, protective goggles should always be worn. For other parts of the body, please follow the instructions for use and, where appropriate, the advice of your dermatologist.
Can the area around the eyes be treated?
Only with closed eyes, very short exposure times and particular caution. For this sensitive area, medical advice is recommended if in doubt.
Can I use the lamp during summer as well?
Yes, provided the treated areas have not also been exposed to strong sunlight. Avoid combining NB-UVB therapy with intense natural UV exposure on the same day.
What should I do if skin irritation occurs?
Pause the treatment temporarily and allow the skin to settle. Treatment should only be resumed once the irritation has fully subsided, using a reduced exposure time.
Why is there no redness at the beginning?
Initial exposure times are intentionally kept short. The aim is a mild erythema, which should appear a few hours after treatment and fade again by the following day. If this does not occur, the exposure time can be increased gradually by 20–30 seconds.
Is NB-UVB suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Yes, but only after medical advice. NB-UVB may affect folic acid levels, so individual medical guidance is advisable.
Is NB-UVB therapy suitable for children?
Yes, but only under paediatric dermatology supervision and with individually adjusted exposure times.
How should the lamp be used correctly?
Treatment of one area lasts on average 3–4 minutes. A few hours after use, the skin should appear slightly pink to mildly red – this mild erythema indicates that the treatment has been appropriately dosed. Carry out the therapy 2 to 3 times per week and leave at least 48 hours between sessions. The exposure time should only be increased once the redness has completely subsided.
