How to choose a home UVB lamp for vitiligo: Philips BU‑1S vs BU‑10 vs Kernel KN‑4003BL2 vs Dermalight® 80R

Narrowband UVB (311 nm) phototherapy is one of the standard, dermatologist-recommended approaches to vitiligo in the UK – it is the same type of light used in NHS phototherapy units. A handheld lamp lets you treat your patches at home, two to three times a week, without travelling to a clinic. The question is: which lamp? Why 311 nm narrowband UVB

Not every “UV light” is suitable for vitiligo. Sunbed tubes and UVA lamps work at different wavelengths and are not recommended. Narrowband UVB (NB‑UVB) at 311 nm is the spectrum most widely used in dermatology for vitiligo: it stimulates the melanocytes at the edges of the patches and in the hair follicles – the places from which pigment returns – while being gentler on the skin than broadband UVB. All four lamps in this comparison work at this wavelength and use the Philips PL‑S 9W/01 medical tube (or its equivalent), which is the standard in this category.

Home lamp or NHS phototherapy?

Many of our UK customers have been offered NB‑UVB through their dermatology department. Clinic phototherapy is excellent, but it usually means two or three hospital visits a week for several months, waiting lists vary by area, and courses are limited in length. A home lamp does not replace your dermatologist – it lets you keep to the same routine at home, continue after a clinic course has finished, or treat small areas (face, hands, neck) that do not justify a full-body cabin. Always tell your dermatologist that you are using a home lamp.

What matters when choosing a handheld UVB lamp

1. Treatment area

Handheld lamps cover roughly 40–60 cm² (about 11 × 4 cm) per position. That is enough for the face, hands, neck, elbows or knees. If your vitiligo covers larger areas (back, abdomen, whole legs), each session will take longer because you treat the area section by section. For extensive vitiligo, most people still start with a handheld lamp and use it on the face and hands, where results are usually seen first.

2. Timer and dosing

In phototherapy the exposure time is increased in small steps (20 seconds per session in our protocol). An accurate timer with automatic switch-off is therefore more important than it looks – without one it is easy to overdo it. Some lamps also let you set the dose directly in J/cm², which is useful if you are continuing a course that was started at a clinic, where dosing works the same way.

3. Comb attachment and keeping the distance

The comb is not only for the scalp. It also keeps the lamp at the right distance from the skin (usually 2–3 cm), so that every session delivers the same dose. All four lamps come with a comb attachment.

4. Protective goggles

Which lamp is right for whom

Philips BU‑1S – the most affordable way into home phototherapy

The lightest and least expensive lamp in our range, with the same Philips tube and wavelength as the pricier models, simple controls and a comb head. A good choice if you have smaller patches on the face, hands or neck and want to try home phototherapy without a large outlay. Because it has no automatic timer, use the stopwatch on your phone and follow the protocol times exactly.

Philips BU‑10 – dosing in J/cm², just like the clinic

The only handheld lamp in our range that, besides a timer (0–30 minutes), lets you set the dose directly in 0–5 J/cm². If your dermatologist has given you a dosing schedule in joules, or you are continuing a course started at an NHS or private phototherapy unit, this is the most practical option. It is a little heavier (just under a kilogram), which is not a problem for sessions of up to ten minutes.

Kernel KN‑4003BL2 – complete kit and travel-friendly power

The Kernel comes with everything you need to start: UV goggles, a removable comb and a mains adapter. The 100–240 V power supply means you can use the lamp abroad without a converter. OLED display with a timer up to 30 minutes, 3 cm working distance, IP22 rating. A good balance of features and price for people who want to treat regularly and don't want to buy anything extra. Dermalight® 80R – German medical device with a 4-year warranty

The Dermalight® 80R by Dr. K. Hönle Medizintechnik is a certified medical device from a German manufacturer of medical technology. It is the lightest of the four (285 g) and comes with an LCD timer, comb, goggles and a patient booklet. The main argument is the 4-year warranty on all parts and long-term availability of spare parts and service. If you expect to use the lamp for several years – for example with more extensive or active vitiligo – it is an investment that pays off. Many customers buy it as the Dermalight® 80R package with Vitistop Gel and Tablets, which covers the first month of the protocol.

What else you will need

• A routine. Our day-by-day vitiligo treatment plan explains how to start (adults from 30 seconds, children from 15 seconds), how to add 20 seconds per session and what to do if the skin turns red. • Vitistop Gel. Vitistop Gel with Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi) oil is applied to the patches about 30 minutes before each UVB session – in the protocol the gel and the light are designed to be used together; the gel on its own has minimal effect.
• Vitistop Tablets. Vitistop Tablets with L‑tyrosine, copper, zinc, selenium and vitamins D3, E and B as nutritional support during phototherapy (from 12 years; for children Vitix Tablets).
• Sun protection. Do not combine the lamp and sunbathing on the same day; protect treated and newly repigmented skin with a high-SPF cream from our Sun protection range.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a UVB lamp

Is there a difference between a cheap and an expensive 311 nm lamp if they use the same tube?

Not in wavelength – all of them use the Philips 9 W NB‑UVB tube. The differences are in timer accuracy and dosing, what is in the box (goggles, adapter), weight, warranty length and whether the lamp is a certified medical device with service available. For short-term use on small areas a cheaper model is enough; for several years of use the Dermalight® 80R is worth it.

How long does the tube last and can it be replaced?

With normal home use (a few minutes, 2–3 times a week) a Philips PL‑S 9W/01 tube lasts for years, but its output gradually decreases, so we recommend having it checked after extended use. Tubes are replaceable – contact us and we will advise on replacement and service for your model.

Do I need protective goggles?

For treating the body with a handheld lamp they are not essential, but for the face and the eye area we recommend them, and your eyes must be closed. All four lamps in this comparison come with UV goggles in the box.

Is a handheld lamp suitable for children?

Can I use a lamp if I am on prescription treatment (e.g. ruxolitinib cream or a JAK inhibitor)?

Combinations of prescription treatments with NB‑UVB are being studied precisely because they complement each other. Whether and how to combine them is always your dermatologist's decision – ask before you start.

Is a handheld lamp enough for extensive vitiligo?

It can be done, but a session takes longer because you treat the area in 4 × 11 cm sections. For vitiligo covering most of the body, clinic phototherapy in a full-body cabin is more efficient; the handheld lamp is then used for the face and hands, or to continue between or after clinic courses.
