Why Choose the KERNEL KN-4003BL2?

311 nm Philips NB-UVB

Uses a Philips PL-S 9W/01/2P narrowband UVB lamp with a peak wavelength of approximately 311 nm – the wavelength commonly used in dermatology phototherapy for vitiligo and psoriasis.

OLED Display + Timer

The integrated OLED screen and microcomputer timer make it easier to set and monitor each treatment session accurately, with a maximum programmable exposure time of 30 minutes.

55 cm² Treatment Area

A treatment window of approximately 55 cm² allows efficient targeted exposure of individual patches while keeping the device compact enough for home use and travel.

Comb Attachment for the Scalp

The comb helps separate hair and maintain the recommended treatment distance, making the unit practical for scalp psoriasis and other areas where hair can block UVB light.

Integrated Reflector

The internal reflector helps direct the UVB output towards the treatment area for more controlled, consistent application.

Built for Regular Home Use

Mains powered from 100–240 V, compact, easy to handle and protected by an IP22-rated enclosure. The KN-4003BL2 is the mains-powered version of the 4003BL2 series.

A Step Up in Treatment Control

If you want the simplest possible handheld UVB lamp, the BU-1S remains a straightforward option. The KN-4003BL2 is designed for users who prefer more control during regular long-term treatment, thanks to its display, timer and more structured interface.

The key difference is convenience and treatment control – not a different therapeutic wavelength. Both models use 311 nm narrowband UVB technology with a Philips 9W UVB light source.

Preparing for Your First Session

  1. Use the lamp only for a confirmed diagnosis and follow the device instructions or the treatment plan recommended by your healthcare professional.
  2. Connect the power supply, switch the unit on and wear suitable UV-protective goggles where required.
  3. Keep the treatment head at the recommended distance of approximately 3 cm. The comb attachment can help maintain this distance.
  4. For the standard starting protocol, the initial exposure is 30 seconds for adults and 15 seconds for children. Children should use phototherapy only with appropriate medical supervision.

Directions for Use

  • Treat 2–3 times per week, leaving at least 48 hours between sessions.
  • Only treat when any redness (erythema) from the previous session has subsided and the skin has fully recovered.

A desired skin reaction (erythema – slight redness) typically appears 6–8 hours after UVB exposure:

  • No redness: increase the exposure time by 20 seconds at the next session.
  • Mild redness: if it clears within 24 hours, increase the exposure by 20 seconds at the next session.
  • Noticeable redness (desired response): if the skin is still slightly pink after 24 hours, keep the same exposure time and wait until the redness has completely faded before treating again.
  • Strong redness: pause treatment until the skin has returned to normal, then reduce the exposure time by 20%.
  • The typical exposure per spot is approximately 3–4 minutes, depending on skin type.

Following the protocol?

For vitiligo, our current protocol combines regular NB-UVB phototherapy with a structured treatment routine and skin-response monitoring. For psoriasis, follow the psoriasis-specific routine and any prescribed treatment exactly as directed by your clinician.

Frequently Asked Questions – KERNEL KN-4003BL2

Is the KN-4003BL2 a Philips lamp?
The device itself is manufactured by KERNEL. Its treatment light source is a Philips PL-S 9W/01/2P narrowband UVB bulb with a peak wavelength of approximately 311 nm.
What is the difference between the KN-4003BL2 and the BU-1S?
Both are handheld 311 nm NB-UVB devices using a Philips 9W UVB light source. The BU-1S is our simpler entry-level option. The KN-4003BL2 adds an OLED display, built-in timer, integrated reflector, IP22 enclosure protection and a more advanced control interface. The main advantage is easier session control and convenience rather than a different treatment wavelength.
Can I use it for scalp psoriasis?
Yes. The comb attachment is designed to help part the hair so that UVB light can reach the scalp more effectively. It also helps maintain the intended distance between the lamp and the skin.
Can the KN-4003BL2 be used on the face?
Targeted NB-UVB phototherapy can be used on facial vitiligo or psoriasis, but facial skin can be more sensitive. Use appropriate eye protection, never look directly at the UVB light and increase exposure cautiously according to your treatment plan.
How often should I use the lamp?
Most VitiligoShop home phototherapy routines use NB-UVB 2–3 times per week, leaving at least 48 hours between sessions on the same area. Treatment time should be adjusted gradually according to skin response, the device instructions and any advice from your healthcare professional.
How quickly can I expect results?
Phototherapy is a gradual treatment and results vary considerably between people, conditions and body areas. Some users notice early changes after several weeks, while meaningful improvement can take several months of consistent treatment. Do not increase UVB exposure aggressively in an attempt to speed up results.
Who should check with a doctor before using UVB phototherapy?
If you do not have a confirmed diagnosis, are pregnant, have a photosensitive condition, have a history of skin malignancy, or take medication that may increase sensitivity to UV light, seek medical advice before starting phototherapy. The manufacturer's documentation also lists a number of specific conditions in which UV radiation should not be used.

The KERNEL KN-4003BL2 is a practical choice for anyone looking for targeted 311 nm NB-UVB treatment with more precise session control. It keeps the Philips narrowband UVB light source while adding the convenience of a modern display, timer, reflector and scalp comb in one compact handheld device.
